On 26th November 2016 Hyde Band competed in the annual Winter contest at the Life Centre in Bournemouth. We chose to play the march ‘ORB’ and the test piece ‘Variations on a Ninth’ by Gilbert Vinter. The band played really well on stage and it was arguably our best performance to date. ‘Variations on a Ninth’ has a number of very challenging cadenzas and solos for all the principal players in the band and all the soloists did the band proud on the day. It was another good day at the office for Hyde Band, coming 2nd in the 1st Section and winning the March prize of the day and awarded an overall 3rd place. We celebrated in true Hyde Band style after with a few drinks and a curry. A fantastic result to end the contesting year, which puts us in an excellent position going into the Regional Championships in March 2017!
The band has been very busy over the weekend getting into the festive spirit early by recording our brand new Christmas CD. It was a challenging weekend of banding with many 'takes' of the same pieces to ensure the CD is of the highest quality.
Hyde Band would like to thank all those who supported their 'Last Night of the Proms' Concert at Forres Sandle Manor School on 24th September. The concert raised in excess of £1,000 which will be shared between Hyde Church and the band. Professional Soprano singer Elizabeth Ferrie impressed the audience with a beautiful rendition of 'Over the Rainbow' and 'I Dreamed a Dream' and she led the singing of traditional Proms favourites, including 'British Sea Songs', 'Jerusalem' and 'Pomp and Circumstance'.
Following a public appeal and press campaign in August to find suitable temporary accommodation, the band are extremely grateful to Mike Jackson of the Rotary Club for allowing the band to use the hall at Glasshouse Studios at Tinkers' Cross, Fordingbridge. We hope to be able to return to our base in Elliotts, Fordingbridge, early next year.
