January 2016: Training Band Wessex Contest

Training Band Wessex Contest

Our Training band under their conductor, Lloyd Bartlett, enjoyed performing at the Wessex Youth and Training band Contest in Downton in January. It was the first time on the contest stage for many of the players, young and older, but they wowed the audience with their rendition of Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’, complete with a rap sung by Jake, our young Euphonium player. He was presented with a Silver Award; his younger brother, Oliver, aged 6, received the trophy for ‘Youngest Player’ in the contest.

August 2015: 25 Years of the Roaring 40s and Bygone Days

Roaring 40s 2015On Saturday 1st of August the band were incredibly proud to perform in the South Gorley WWII aircraft hangar at RAF Ibsley for our annual Roaring 40s Concert. This year was a little different as it marked 25 years of the Bygone Days celebrations. A huge achievement for everyone involved, and none more so than Mrs Elaine Micklewright who has been organising and hosting the events every year. Over the 25 years of ‘Bygone Days’, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised to support local charities including – Salisbury Hospice, Salisbury Alzheimer’s Society and the Royal British Legion Women’s Section.

May 2015: SWBBA Weston-super-Mare Spring Contest

Greg, Jonathan and Andy with the trophyOn 20th May 2015 the band competed in the South West Brass Band Association (SWBBA) spring contest in Weston-super-Mare. Building on our success at the Regional Championships in March, the band chose to play the area test piece - Philip Sparke’s ‘A London Overture’. The sun was shining on Hyde Band once again and we were placed 2nd out of the six competing bands; runners-up to the now Championship section band, Verwood Concert Brass. Adjudicators Paul Holland and Steve Sykes praised the band for our solid playing and musical interpretation.

Spring 2015: Happy Birthday Hyde Band - 120 Years

Bert ShutlerThis is a special year for the band as we are celebrating 120 years since the band was founded in 1895!

Hyde Band was originally formed as a Fife and Drum band in North Gorley, led by Mr H E ‘Bert’ Shutler. The band has a proud history, boasting many achievements both on and off the contest stage, notably being crowned West of England Regional Champions in the fourth, third, second and first sections, when the band was quickly promoted through the ranks in the 1990s. In 1998, the band was announced Wessex Brass Band Association Champions, under the baton of Mr Peter Wise.

March 2015: West of England Regional Championships

Mandy and Natasha with Heidi the HippoThat time of year is here again where bands across the country compete in their regional brass band contests, to decide which bands gain a place in the National Finals contest. As members of the West of England brass band region, Hyde Band once again visited the sunny ‘English Riviera’ in Torquay on Sunday 15th March. The test piece for this year, arguably a popular choice, was Philip Spark’s ‘A London Overture’. The band worked hard rehearsing this test piece in the lead up to the contest and we are delighted to announce that our hard work paid off, with a very respectful 4th place out of 15 competing bands in the 1st Section.
