The band is happy to announce the appointment of Helen Kinder as Musical Director. Helen recently conducted the band for our concert in Alderholt which was a great success. We have a busy summer calendar, most notably with the annual ‘Roaring 40s’ concert in August and with a new rehearsal room in Sandleheath there are definitely exciting times ahead.
It is with great sadness that the band announces the resignation of our Musical Director, Ivan Hutchinson. Ivan has recently accepted a new post in The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Collingwood and is now unable to give the time and commitment to Hyde Band that he has in the past.
When the Band were drawn to play 13th at the West of England Regional Championships in March 2011, there were a few moans and groans from the more superstitious members and supporters among us, but as it turns out there was no need!
The test-piece was 'Le Carnival Romain' by Hector Berlioz, a classical composition, which in past contests has suited Hyde Band, so we knew we had an chance of doing well. With no expectations but our own, everyone was fairly relaxed. We knew our soloists were secure and that our ensemble work was tight and controlled, and in the run up to the contest there was a feeling that we were heading towards a peak performance on stage.
A big congratulations to Natasha and Dave Marchant on the arrival of baby Alexia Ruth Jane Marchant on 26th February. We can't help but notice that this is the second baby which now clashes with the area contest! We hope both Alexia and her big sister Eloise decide to take up brass instruments when they're older so they can celebrate their birthdays in style at a brass band contest!
The 7th August saw the band perform in their annual Roaring 40s concert, which has been a hit year after year and this year was no different. The audience lifted the roof of the Gorley aircraft hangar with their singing, dancing and flag waving and the band provided the music to make it all happen. From the American swing music of Glenn Miller including ‘American Patrol’, ‘String of Pearls’ and ‘In the Mood’ right to the patriotic music of Britain -‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Rule Britannia’ – there was something for everyone.
