Musical Director - Jonathan Lush-Camps LRSM


Jonathan Lush-Camps LRSMJonathan Lush-Camps was born near St Austell, Cornwall to a musical family. After early cornet lessons from his father, Jonathan joined the St. Dennis Youth Band, at that time the National Youth Champion band of Great Britain. He developed a passionate interest in music-making which resulted in him joining the Royal Marines Band Service at Deal in 1979, studying cornet and violin. After completing his training in 1982, he served in the Royal Marines Band at HMS Raleigh and the staff band of the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal, Kent.

Jonathan distinguished himself on his Bandmasters’ course, winning the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians for the most outstanding student, the Chappell Conducting Prize for being the most promising student in the art of conducting and gaining the LRSM diploma. Upon completing the Bandmasters' course, he served for a year in the Band of RM Royal Marines Portsmouth. This included a three-month period as the lead violinist on board HMY Britannia, visiting such places as Malta, Cyprus, Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Aden and Bombay.

Jonathan also served as Bandmaster in the Bands of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth and Commando Training Centre Royal Marines, and as the Chief Instructor Higher Training at the Royal Marines School of Music.

Throughout his Marines career, he maintained his passionate interest in brass bands. He has conducted many bands throughout the south and west of England and has three times conducted bands in the national championship finals. He now lives with his wife Katy and son Oliver in Barton-on-Sea, from where he concentrates on his hobbies of trying to lose weight and railway modelling. Jonathan is a passionate supporter of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, but he has promised to support a much better team in his next lifetime.
